Mr. Alexander J. Urbelis is a CISO and cybersecurity attorney. Alex has been part of the information security community for more than 20 years and has deep and varied experience as a C-level officer in two of the world’s most distinguished international brands. Alex has also been in-house counsel, a private practice litigator, and a federal attorney. As the Chief Information Security Officer of the National Football League, Alex controlled cyber risk and directed the NFL’s worldwide information security strategy for the protection of information assets within and without the NFL. Based in both New York and London, as the Chief Compliance Officer of Richemont, one of the world’s largest luxury conglomerates, Alex handled all aspects of worldwide legal compliance, including anti-bribery and anti-corruption efforts, whistle-blowing matters, and internal and external investigations. Prior to being CCO, Alex was in-house information security counsel, responsible responsibility for mitigating information security risk, investigations, and the procurement of IT and information security services. At Steptoe & Johnson, Alex's practice was a mixture of data security, privacy, intellectual property, and litigation. Counseling companies both domestically and abroad, Alex provided data security and privacy advice, and assisted many of the most well-known technology companies and non-profit organizations with issues of Internet governance and the expansion of the DNS through ICANN’s new generic top-level domains (gTLDs). Alex’s federal service includes working for the US Army JAG Corps, the Office of General Counsel of the Central Intelligence Agency, and as a Research Associate at Dartmouth College’s Institute for Security Technology Studies, a national center for cybersecurity and counterterrorism research and analysis. Alex also served as a judicial law clerk to Chief Judge Effron of the US Court of Appeals for the Armed Forces. Alex is regularly called upon by the media to opine on matters legal and technical, and his published writings range from scholarly works, to bar journals, to a series of op-editorials for CNN.
