My most recent venture is to lead a number of teams in google deepmind, which is, to say the least in the middle of a exciting battle. The main fronts are how to evolve code writing (including taking into account the last 50 years of best software practices), how thinking works (thinking about thinking) and what are the key algorithmic progress for the next wave of ML. I never had a defined career plan, but I’ve been fortunate to have some truly transformative experiences. I’ve worked in tech for more than 30 years, from software to operating systems, to the early days of mobile, as well as detours to Facebook and Yahoo. I was one of the lead developers on the Be Operating System, working with the audacious team who created some of the technology that influenced the design of Android. I was part of the leadership team at X helping to shape the future of the moonshot factory. I ensure that our technology and science are robust and I spread enthusiasm for cutting edge tech. I spend my days as a storyteller, connector and ambassador for breakthrough tech. I’m X’s resident guinea pig for many experiments (sometimes to the detriment of my body). I also find time to code every day. It’s my meditation. Outside of work I’m an amateur astronomer. I bought my first telescope at 11 and have found inspiration from gazing at the night sky ever since.
